Instability is the eighth in an annual series of publications that feature the best young architects as selected by the Architectural League of New York in their annual Young Architects competition. This year candidates confronted the question of defining their architectural practices in the midst of shaken institutions, weakened states of normalcy, and defunct analytical models. Joining the ranks of notable past winners, such as Steven Holl, Carlos Jimenez, Billie Tsien, Architecture Research Office, and Rick Joy, the winners of the Young Architects 8 competition--David Benjamin and Soo-in Yang, The Living KBSA, WilliamsonWilliamson, Ply Architecture, MAD, and Julio Salcedo--respond to these investigations with projects that are unique, imaginative, resourceful, and inspiring.

The Living was created in 2004 by David Benjamin and Soo-in Yang. The practice emphasizes open-source research and design and views each project as part of larger threads of experimentation and construction. They currently teach at Pratt Institute and at Columbia, where they are co-directors of the Living Architecture Lab.

KBAS was founded in 2002 by partners Keith Kaseman and Julie Beckman. Kaseman and Beckman are currently working on their winning scheme for the Pentagon Memorial Design Competition (projected for fall 2008) and have operations centralized in Philadelphia.

WILLIAMSONWILLIAMSON is a Toronto-based architecture and design studio founded in 2002 by Betsy and Shane Williamson. The studio's work often incorporates design methodologies associated with digital fabrication as a critical engagement of traditional modes of construction and tectonic expression.

PLY Architecture was established in 1999 and is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Headed by Craig Borum and Karl Daubmann, their work has been published internationally and has received awards for both built and speculative projects.

MAD Office is Beijing-based architectural and design collaboration between Yansong Ma and Yosuke Hayano. The construction of the Absolute Tower in Toronto, Canada, will make MAD Office the first-ever Chinese architectural office to design a international landmark project.

Julio Salcedo is based in the United States and Spain. The firm engages in disciplinary modes of architectural design and practice particularly as they apply to landscape and urban design.
