"In a world obsessed with an international cast of ego-driven starchitects, San Francisco architects Elizabeth Ranieri and Byron Kuth are the thoughtful, versatile, low-key, detail-obsessed exceptions." --Diane Dorrans Saeks

Architects Elizabeth Ranieri and Byron Kuth arrived in the Bay Area just prior to the Loma Prieta Earthquake and established Kuth/Ranieri Architects in 1990. Their work was largely influenced by the uniqueness of the region--its culture, exceptional beauty, and landscape. They have split their time over the last two decades between teaching, building, and research and have produced a broad spectrum of work, from small-scaled objects and installations, to architectural and urban design proposals investigating more universal problems of building, culture, and global environments. Kuth/Ranieri Architects presents their work along with their ideas, putting forth cultural viewpoints of sustainability that have informed both their practice and the architectural discipline at large.

In its work, Kuth/Ranieri Architects amplifies the craft of each design. With materials like the translucent glass used to sequence a view from Russian Hill, the constellation of domes used to manipulate sound at an AIDS memorial, and the 800 pounds of synthetic felt and 1,000 C-clamps used to create the Fabrications installation at SFMOMA, the firm brings subtlety and innovation to every project. The latest in our New Voices in Architecture series, Kuth/Ranieri Architects features several built works, including Nob Hill Residence, Park Presidio Residence, Russian Hill Penthouse, William Wurster Renovation, Hillsborough Residence, LEF Foundation Offices / Gallery, Guesthouse / Gallery, and Lodi Bunkhouse. The book also features several projects, including Calistoga House, Malama Learning Village, Contemporary Art Museum at the Presidio, AIDS Memorial Grove, Harvey Milk Memorial Car, Climate Clock, Martyrs' Square, Mission Bay, and Folding Water. Texts by Ila Berman, Mitchell Schwarzer, Rodolphe el-Khoury, and Aaron Betsky discuss issues of modernism, fetish, and meaning.

Byron Kuth and Elizabeth Ranieri established Kuth/Ranieri Architects in 1990 and launched the Deep Green Design Alliance in 2003. They are on the faculty at the California College of the Arts.
